Two more tunnels and a glorious day

We took a day off yesterday, there were a few odds and sods to do around the boat, and the weather was looking a bit dodgy. In the event it didn’t turn out too badly; staying dry most of the day.

We had a spectacular sunset last night.

Sunset over the Weaver

Early morning mist soon burned off today, leaving us with a bright, still morning.

Looking down the Weaver towards Dutton Sluices

We pulled pins at 10:45, timing our arrival at Saltersford Tunnel for 11:40. This tunnel, like Preston Brook, has time controlled one way working.

Out into the sunshine again, we crossed the basin then made the awkward turn into the entrance of Barnton Tunnel.

Barnton Tunnel

There’s no restriction on this one. Swinging wide to the right you can see the far end, and have to give way to boats already coming through.

Nearing the end of Barnton Tunnel

It’s a shame that on such a lovely, sunny day we spent 25 minutes of it underground!

We had a close encounter with a Claymoore hire boat through Bridge 201, Barnton Bridge, built across the apex of a sharp bend, then toddled on, arriving at Anderton at around 1 o’clock.

I had my last training run this morning, now it’s time to relax and carbo-load ready for the Great North Run on Sunday. It’s live on the BBC, if you look carefully you might see yours truly. Then again, there are over 50,000 runners, so maybe not…. My number is 10731, on an orange background.
